Sacred Space

Creating Sacred Space involves many aspects but most primary is the process of Space Clearing. Space Clearing is the art of cleansing and consecrating an environment so that life energy 'chi' can freely flow and vibrate at a refined level.

Just as we need to physically clean our spaces so must we 'energetically' cleanse them. The simple truth is that whether we can 'see' stuck energy or not, we usually can feel it. This might be experienced, as a sense of discomfort is a particular place, a feeling of fatigue, or of being blocked when we try to get anything done at our office or home.

Energy builds up as the result of the people and events that occurred there whether 5 minutes or 100 years ago. Everything that happens in an environment gets recorded in the walls, floors and objects in that space. Particularly, anything that occurs with strong emotions has a large residual effect and we end up living or working in that substance until such time that it is 'cleared'. Corners, crannies and dark spaces particularly accumulate this residue. Earth energies called 'geopathic stress', caused by naturally occuring underground water, fault lines and magnetic fields can also create dis-ease in an environment.

Objects too need Space Clearing. Second-hand or antique furniture, clothing and jewelry hold the energetic traces of the person that owned it before. If you would prefer not to have those influences, it is best to clear them. Other reasons for Space clearing may be a divorce of a relationship, bankruptcy of a business, an illness or death, a reoccurring problem, or simply to cleanse. For a therapist space clearing between clients can improve the quality of the work. Even for effective businesses, space clearing can revitalize, improve productivity and generally harmonize the energy in the office. When traveling or even moving into a home just built Space Clearing can create a feeling of being more 'at home' and safer.

A very primary aspect of space clearing is clutter clearing. Wherever you find the stacks and piles of 'stuff' is where you will be stuck or limited in you life. So before anything else...clear your clutter!

Many rituals can be performed to clear and bless your environment. The most important aspect is your heartfelt intentions. Traditionally sounds such are chants, bells, loud noise and prayer clear space. Also the burning of incense, sage, 'Chen Pei' (dried orange peels) are used to cleanse. It is also always appropriate to offer those energies that you are asking to leave, something lovely such as fruit, flowers or candles. Many traditions have methods that use combinations of these things and others. Judith Wendell of Sacred Currents employs both ritual and dowsing techniques when facilitating clearings. Her experience has told her that a clear environment supports both the physical and emotional well being of those who live or work there.

The main purpose of Space Clearing is to open the environment so that it can support your goals. Cleansing the environment is the ideal first step for any feng Shui consultation.

One cannot collect all the beautiful shells on the beach.
One can collect only a few and they are more beautiful if they are few.
Gradually, one discards and keeps just the perfect specimen.
One sets it apart by itself, ringed round by space like an island.
For it is only framed in space that beauty blooms.
Only in space are events and objects and people unique and significant - and therefore beautiful.
Even small and casual things take on significance if they are washed in space.
Like a few autumn grasses in one corner of an Oriental painting, the rest of the space bare.
